Stonemasons for El Escorial

According to the Town Council, building the monastery of El Escorial under Philip II absorbed a lot of labour from nearby villages, and it is "more than likely" that Villalba stonemasons took part; in 1583 the Puente del Herreño was built to link the monastery with the old Roman road. In 1630 Philip IV granted Collado Villalba the privilege of town status, at the request of the Duchess of Infantado, in exchange for 300 ducats for the armies of Italy.

Province of Madrid and the railway

A Royal Decree of 30 November 1833 included it definitively in the province of Madrid, and in 1840 the Alpedrete neighbourhood split off. The Príncipe Pío–El Escorial line, built under Isabella II, had a halt at Collado Villalba and in the early 20th century made it easier for Madrileños to go up to the mountains in summer.

From a rural centre to the head of its district

In 1950 it was still a rural centre, with 20% of the working population in farming and livestock. From those years significant second-home growth began, and the drive of the company MADE and the later motorway took it to first place in population in its district.
