A hamlet that moved to higher ground
According to the Town Council, before Leganés there were settlements in the hamlets of Butarque and San Juan de Overa, La Torrecilla and the hillocks of the La Mora estate and Polvoranca. Around 1280 the villagers moved to a higher, cleaner, airier spot near water because of disease, and a first farmstead was built there. The first documents on the hamlet of Legamar date from the 13th century.
Marquesses, artists and a barracks
From 1680 the Guzmán family ran the town as Marquesses of Leganés, related to the Count-Duke of Olivares. Juan de Austria lived in the town, José Benito de Churriguera made altarpieces in the church of El Salvador, and Sabatini and Hermosilla built the Walloon Guards' barracks, now Universidad Carlos III. Isabella II ordered the Casa de Salud de Santa Isabel built.
Immigration in the sixties and seventies
The Saboya barracks operated until the 1990s. In the 1960s and 70s thousands of immigrants arrived from Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y León, and today Leganés has almost 200,000 residents.
