A territory from several municipalities
According to the City Council, San Blas-Canillejas includes land that belonged to the municipalities of Canillejas, Barajas, Vicálvaro and Canillas. Until after the Civil War the area had no value as a possible expansion zone for the city, and Canillejas was annexed to Madrid by Decree of 24 June 1949.
The Gran San Blas estate
The Polígono del Gran San Blas, built in the late 1960s, was an example of a public-housing neighbourhood, intended to absorb the large shanty-town settlements Madrid had at the time.
Residential on one side, industrial on the other
The district has a mixed character: residential use is in the Simancas and San Blas neighbourhoods, and industrial use in García Noblejas-Julián Camarillo and along the Barcelona road. Its neighbourhoods are Simancas, Hellín, Amposta, Arcos, Rosas, Rejas, Canillejas and El Salvador, and its festival is on 8 September, in Canillejas.
